How Can Hyaluronic Acid Do For Your Skin?

First off, don't let the word "acid" fool you.  Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a hydrophilic gel-like, water-binding molecule that is naturally occurring in connective tissues throughout the body.  One molecule alone can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water!  50% of our body's total HA is found in the skin, where it helps to support and hydrate the skin due to its amazing moisture-binding ability.  The layers of our skin are supported below the skin’s surface by fibres made up of collagen and elastin. These fibers form what is known as the connective tissue that contains primarily water, protein complexes, and hyaluronic acid.  HA is also considered a "smart nutrient" as it can adjust its moisture absorption rate based on humidity - relative to season and climate.

Hyaluronic acid has very powerful anti-aging benefits and is known to reverse the sign of aging.  It is a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), the framework in which our skin cells sit.  The reason your skin is (or isn't!) plump is due to the hyaluronic acid within the ECM and connective tissue, which has the ability to attract and hold water, making your skin supple and wrinkle-free.  As we age and our amount of HA decreases (adults have one-twentieth the amount of that of a baby), the skin becomes dehydrated, leading to surface roughness, loss of elasticity and fine lines.  The good news for us is that there are a boatload of serums and creams on the market that have developed scientifically proven formulas that penetrate into the dermis (the skins deepest layers) boosting elasticity and hydration in the skin. Hyaluronic acid is also commonly listed as "sodium hyaluronate" in anti-aging serums and skincare.

Hyaluronic Acid can also be taken as an oral supplement. This can be extremely beneficial to the skin as it plays a crucial role in the production of collagen.  Collagen gives the skin its strength, elasticity, and structure.  As we age, collagen levels gradually lessen and the effects are seen in less vibrant, sagging, and wrinkled skin.  Hyaluronic acid keeps collagen synthesis up.  Higher levels of collagen and HA are related to skin that is more supple and resistant to wrinkles and fine lines. Supplementing your diet with a collagen-boosting vitamin powder can give highly beneficial anti-aging effects too!

Vital Proteins - Collagen Beauty Greens work wonders for me, and I love that it's dairy and gluten-free.  I add a scoop to my protein smoothies in the morning.  It contains Raw Greens, Marine Collagen Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Probiotics, Wheat Grass, Coconut Water Powder, Alfalfa Leaf, Kale, Barley Grass, Spinach and Vanilla Bean Powder.

Hyaluronic Acid is also an important component of cartilage and synovial fluid (the lubricating fluid found between joints).  HA injections are used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis in patients who have already been treated with corticosteroid injections that did not work.  Hyaluronic acid can cushion and lubricate the joint and can even stimulate the production of more natural HA in the knee.  Hyaluronic Acid levels in the joint fluid can be significantly lower in people with osteoarthritis.

LEAF PEOPLE - Hyaluronic Acid & Apple Stem Cell Hydrating Serum

This is quite a powerful hydrating serum with a plant-sourced Hyaluronic Acid as the first ingredient. It contains Rosehip oil for fading dark spots and scars, Vitamin C and Apple Stem Cells (of which there is a lot of interest and controversy in the anti-aging skincare industry).  It also has an essential oil blend of Neroli, Bergamot, Citrus and Sandlewood, plus a Rosa Damascena and Cucumber Hydrosols.

This serum helps to protect the skin from environmental damage due to free radical fighting ingredients,  Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10 and antioxidant-rich plant oils like Borage Seed Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Grapeseed Oil, and Sunflower Oil.   Which are all incredibly moisturising and help to deliver the Hyaluronic Acid to the deeper layers of the skin.
